If you were one of the lucky fans that stuck around for the Good Earth – Pogue’s Run hurling match you were not disappointed. With a win earlier in the day for both teams, winning this game would proclaim the victor as the top team in the league. This titanic contest showcased high level hurling with crisp passing, spectacular point scoring, and amazing blocks. Pogue’s Run also took part in the match… From the first throw in, each team vied for the early score. It would come from an excellent ball played into the full forward line by Matt Lewis. Falling just behind the full back line of Sam Dougherty and Tristan Chaplin, the ball was scooped up by Jimmy Pepper and put in the back on the net. Pogue’s had gain the lead, but would have to hold on to it for dear life because Good Earth would go on a scoring rampage with a goal by Mike Monaghan, 4 points by Brian Church, and 1-3 by Rudy Nehrling. It seemed that Pogue’s couldn’t muster any points other than a Jacob Wilkes free and a couple of goals from 3 different players. At the end of the first half Pogue’s found themselves only up one point and Good Earth with all of the momentum. The second half showcased some stellar defensive play by Keith Healy who recorded three blocks that were instrumental in motivating the Pogue’s defense. Taking Keith’s cue, full backs Woody White and Richard Connolly anchored themselves and refused any goal attempts in the second half. As the half progressed time began to be an issue for team Good Earth who found themselves down 3 points. Knowing a goal would even the score Mike Monaghan looked to strike the hearts of Pogue fans around the world (oh yea, they exist) with the equalizer. Not to be outdone by his namesake, Pogue’s goalkeeper Mike Jones made an excellent save and ultimately sealed the victory. These two teams don’t have much down time for their next match up which will be June 15, Friday night at 8:00pm. Needless to say, this next match will be… |
