Early Sunday morning, the Indy hurlers found the air was crisp and the ground slightly damp.Perfect hurling weather! This was the stage for opening day of what promises to be an excellent hurling season for the great city of Indianapolis. Kicking off the festivities were Connor’s Pub led by co-captain, Heidar Thordarson (Brien Shoemaker apparently values time with his family… pfft!) and new comers Pogue’s Run Grocer, led by captain Nate “The Butcher” Roberts and co-captain Jacob “Face Plant” Wilkes. Both teams wanted to start their season with a win and that fact was apparent by the hard fought match throughout the entire game. Connor’s opened up with a strong performance from “The Scorer” (I think we’re close to everyone just understanding that that is Nora Clark… short-hand, people!) doing what she does best with 2 goals. Along with a plethora of points and a goal from the offensive sticks of Heidar and Eoghan “I Can” Reade, Pogue’s had Run themselves into trouble. The boys in gray however were able to claw their way back to within 2 points at half-time. The beginning of the second half started much like the first, with each time fighting for every point and goal. But it was Pogue’s that would take control of the game with brilliant efforts from Wilkes, Jimmy “The Dr.” Pepper, and Tim “R.N.” Boyll. With some many medically-based nicknames, it’s no wonder that Pogue’s was able to surgically cut through to Connor’s defense. In the end, Pogue’s Run was the victor. Pogue’s Run would later play Goose the Market and Connor’s would play Claddagh Irish Pub. |
