Earth still Good, but Goose is better.

Defense brings Good Earth back down to...um...Earth.
Eugene Burns Field
As the 2012 Indy Hurling Club Pub League regular season winds down, a logjam at the top of the standings has made each game critical to determining playoff seeding. Goose the Market, sporting a 6-2-1 record, took to the pitch against the nutritionally sound hurlers of Good Earth (5-3-1 going in) last Sunday in a match that would either distance Goose from the pack, or create the kind of league standings traffic jam generally reserved for I-69 North at the 465 split during rush hour. God almighty, what a nightmare that is. Am I right? I know.

Anyway, despite the absence of noted hurling phenomenon Tim Moriarty, Goose took to the field and put on a dominating defensive performance. Essentially, the Irish guys on Goose’s roster went feckin’ bananas and made life decidedly un-Good for their eco-friendly opposition. Dave Riordan put the ball over the bar 6 times…or 1 more time than the entire Good Earth squad. Ciaran Connery controlled the action in the defensive backfield along with Travis Parker, while adding a goal and 2 points for Goose. Shawn Kohrman recorded a perfect match as the Goose net minder, holding Good Earth’s vaunted offensive front to no goals.

For Good Earth, Rudy Nehrling carried the load offensively with 4 points. Susan Beaurain pointed as well, but ultimately there wasn’t enough firepower on the Good Earth side to overcome Goose’s stellar defensive performance. The result was a 2-11, 0-5 victory for Goose. Plagued by absences the day of the match, the Earthlings will certainly pose a significant challenge during the playoffs when their squad is back to full strength.

As the final week of the regular season approaches, Goose finds itself heading into a showdown with Claddagh for the #1 seed in the upcoming playoffs. Good Earth can assure itself of a winning record with a victory against Connor’s or Flynn’s. The action heats up on Sunday, July 1st at the Eugene Burns Football facility in Lawrence.
